14 yr old boy birthday present?

He likes books and puzzles. He is very clever (incredible marks at school). I don’t think he would like a gift card except maybe to a bookshop. He is not into computer games, DVDs or CDs or pop music. I know he may sound a little nerdy, but please be helpful. The birthday’s not for a while but I like early preparation. I think a board game, puzzle, fiction book, or philosophy/maths/science book would be a better type of gift. Any specific ideas?

maybe an outing somewhere would be better. he probably has enough educational things to keep him occupied.
