Do crime scene investigators get time off?

I’m interested in forensic science. Specifically crime scene investigating. Yes, I know it’s nothing like on tv. But the thing is, I want to be a good mother. I want to do normal family things like go out with my family, have game nights, movie nights, go on vacations, go to amusement parks, etc. But from what I’ve heard, it seems like there won’t be much of that, because your always getting calls and stuff.
Someone who works as a CSI or knows someone who does, or just knows a lot of information about it..
do CSI’s get time to do this stuff? Do they get to take time off to go on vacations and stuff? Do they get to have quality family time? Or is it all work?
No need to be sassy. I’m just wondering if it’s harder to get time off. And actually sometimes you can get a call at like 1am after working a 12 hour day with no time to sleep. Don’t be rude please.

In general, it’s all work.

Of course you get your vacation, that’s mandatory in a civilised country. You will be on a roster, i.e. working time is assigned to you and that may be day or night. If you’re on a job, you can’t just walk off because you want to spend some time with your family. You are expected to finish or at least stay at the job you’re doing right then.

In crime, it’s of highest importance that you stay on the job until the case is solved because the longer it lasts, the lesser are the chances of solving it. This means you could be kept on the job for 15 hours if needed. If you’re part of a team on a case, you will get calls at every hour of the day, and be it in the middle of the night.

It’s a very irregular working job. You have to decide what you can and want to put first. For this job, it’s definitely the job that counts first.

If you want a predictable job, you shouldn’t become a crime investigator. It’s already the training to become one that won’t allow you much family time. And it’s a long way towards that job. You can’t just study it and be one. You need to practise, mostly whilst being a police officer with vocational training, and that takes years.

If you’re looking for an easy job in that area, you could be an assistant working for them because they can arrange with each other who can help out if one can’t work right when she should.
